It affects the ability to speak, understand, read, and write, and generally occurs as a result of brain injury, most commonly a stroke. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0ca09d4 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"0ca09d4\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0e28e7a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0e28e7a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is aphasia?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eead3fa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eead3fa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Aphasia is an acquired language disorder caused by damage to the brain&#8217;s language centers, characterized by difficulties with verbal or written expression, comprehension, or both. The main cause is ischemic <a href=\"https:\/\/lauralogo.com\/en\/post-stroke-speech-therapy-in-malaga-language-rehabilitation\/\">stroke<\/a>, although it can also be caused by traumatic brain injury, a brain tumor, or neurodegenerative diseases. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>Symptoms can vary widely: from mild difficulty finding words to an almost complete loss of the ability to communicate.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-422620b e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"422620b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-614afa5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"614afa5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How often does aphasia occur after a stroke?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c0bc01b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c0bc01b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A meta-analysis involving more than 168,000 stroke patients found an overall prevalence of aphasia of 34%, with a significantly higher risk in women than in men.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>In other words, approximately 1 in 3 people who suffer a stroke will develop some degree of aphasia. This makes aphasia one of the most common neurological sequelae following a stroke. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d45e289 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d45e289\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0e6407e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0e6407e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Types of aphasia<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0f4c86 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e0f4c86\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10910787\/\">In a sample<\/a> of 625 patients with post-stroke aphasia, the most common subtypes were Broca&#8217;s aphasia (27.2%), anomic aphasia (26.4%), global aphasia (19%), and subcortical aphasia (9.1%).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>The main types of conditions that speech-language pathologists assess and treat are:<\/p><ul><li>Broca&#8217;s aphasia: difficulty speaking fluently, halting speech, relatively intact comprehension. The patient knows what they want to say but cannot express it easily. <\/li><li>Wernicke&#8217;s aphasia: fluent speech but with word errors, significant difficulty understanding. The patient may speak a lot but make little sense. <\/li><li>Global aphasia: the most severe form, which severely impairs both speech production and comprehension.<\/li><li>Anomic aphasia: difficulty finding the right words (anomia), with comprehension generally intact. It is the mildest and most common form in the chronic phase. <\/li><\/ul><p>The potential for recovery varies depending on the type of aphasia: Broca&#8217;s aphasia has an excellent prognosis for functional recovery, while Wernicke&#8217;s aphasia shows more limited recovery, although most patients experience some improvement.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8e6f555 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"8e6f555\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ec35e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4ec35e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">When should I see a speech therapist if I have aphasia?\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4dd800c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4dd800c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It is recommended that speech-language assessment begin as soon as possible after a stroke. Signs that indicate the need for consultation include: <\/p><ul><li>Difficulty finding the right words or expressing oneself in complete sentences<\/li><li>Speech that is halting, slow, or contains frequent errors<\/li><li>Difficulty understanding what others say<\/li><li>Difficulties with reading or writing<\/li><li>Communication-related frustration or social isolation<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-28359bf e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"28359bf\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1e09899 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1e09899\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Aphasia speech therapist: what to expect from treatment\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f0d95e5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f0d95e5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Early intervention makes all the difference.<\/p><p>A prospective randomized controlled trial involving 123 patients with aphasia following an initial acute ischemic stroke demonstrated that speech therapy initiated within the first two days after the stroke and continued for 21 days promotes the recovery of functional communication.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>Aphasia speech therapy includes:<\/p><ul><li>Detailed assessment of the patient&#8217;s language profile<\/li><li>Lexical retrieval exercises (word finding)<\/li><li>Exercise on listening and reading comprehension<\/li><li>Functional and Alternative Communication Strategies<\/li><li>Support and training for families<\/li><\/ul><p>Telerehabilitation is an effective option. It is particularly relevant for patients with mobility difficulties: <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31903800\/\">A randomized clinical trial<\/a> evaluated language telerehabilitation via videoconferencing in patients with post-stroke aphasia, concluding that telerehabilitation augmented by videoconferencing can be a viable model for aphasia rehabilitation with positive effects on linguistic outcomes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>This confirms that online speech therapy sessions are a valid and accessible option for patients with aphasia, especially during the chronic or maintenance phase.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-40a6c87 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"40a6c87\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8d954c0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8d954c0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How long does the treatment take?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9656c08 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9656c08\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There is no set timeframe. Recovery from aphasia is an individual process that depends on factors such as the initial severity, the location of the lesion, age, and the intensity of therapy.
