Many intelligent and capable children have persistent difficulties with reading and writing. It is not laziness. It is not a lack of effort. It typically appears during school-age years. It stems from a neurodevelopmental disorder with a significant genetic component.  <\/p><p>Children with dyslexia have difficulty:<\/p><ul><li>Reading accurately and fluently<\/li><li>Understanding what they read<\/li><li>Writing correctly<\/li><li>Spelling words<\/li><\/ul><p>Dyslexia is not related to intelligence. Nor is it related to vision or hearing problems. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-422620b e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"422620b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-614afa5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"614afa5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How many children in Spain have dyslexia?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c0bc01b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c0bc01b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Dyslexia is more common than people think. In Spain, prevalence studies show rates ranging from 5% to 11.8%, depending on the region and the methodology used. A study conducted in Murcia involving more than 2,000 elementary school children estimated a prevalence of 11.8%.  <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>In Andalusia, a study with a sample population of more than 944,000 students aged 6 to 16 estimated a prevalence of 3.6% using strict criteria, and up to twice that figure using broader criteria. In addition, approximately 31,700 students may have difficulties associated with dyslexia without having been identified. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>This means that in a class of 25 children, there are likely 2 or 3 with reading difficulties. And many of them have not been diagnosed or received any intervention. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d45e289 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d45e289\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0e6407e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0e6407e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Causes of dyslexia<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0f4c86 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e0f4c86\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Dyslexia has a neurobiological basis. It is not the result of poor teaching or a lack of motivation. <\/p><p>When a parent has dyslexia, the likelihood that their child will also have it is between 25% and 50%. This confirms its genetic basis. <\/p><p>Cognitively speaking, the core of the problem is often a <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9954228\/\">deficit in phonological awareness<\/a>\u2014that is, difficulty identifying and manipulating the sounds of language. This directly interferes with learning to read.  <\/p><p>The most widely accepted hypothesis in the scientific literature is that dyslexia results from a deficit in phonological awareness. However, there is also evidence suggesting that visuospatial deficits play a contributing role. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-28359bf e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"28359bf\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1e09899 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1e09899\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Warning signs: When to see a speech-language pathologist for dyslexia<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f0d95e5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f0d95e5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Some signs may appear before children begin formal reading instruction. Others become apparent around the ages of 6 or 7. <\/p><p>Before age 6:<\/p><ul><li>Difficulty learning songs or rhymes<\/li><li>Confusion between similar sounds<\/li><li>A more limited vocabulary than their peers<\/li><li>Difficulty learning the alphabet<\/li><\/ul><p> <\/p><p>Ages 6\u20137 and up:<\/p><ul><li>He reads very slowly and makes a lot of mistakes<\/li><li>Mistakes similar letters (b\/d, p\/q)<\/li><li>Omit or reverse letters when writing<\/li><li>He has good listening comprehension but struggles with reading<\/li><li>Avoids reading aloud<\/li><li>Academic performance below their true potential<\/li><\/ul><p>Without proper support, children with dyslexia may develop low self-esteem, a lack of motivation in school, and emotional difficulties. Early detection allows for intervention before these issues take hold. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-40a6c87 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"40a6c87\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8d954c0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8d954c0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Treatment of Dyslexia: The Role of the Speech therapist<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9656c08 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9656c08\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Speech therapy is the standard treatment for dyslexia. The earlier treatment begins, the better the results. <\/p><p>The speech therapist focuses on:<\/p><ul><li>Phonological awareness: identifying and manipulating sounds<\/li><li>The grapheme-phoneme correspondence: linking letters and sounds<\/li><li>Reading fluency: reading quickly and accurately<\/li><li>Reading Comprehension: Understanding What You Read<\/li><li>Writing and Spelling<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d74cbbd e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d74cbbd\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a6345d3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a6345d3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What does the scientific evidence say?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fe3d7e5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fe3d7e5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A systematic review evaluating <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30802473\/\">visuospatial interventions<\/a> in children with dyslexia found that phonological training programs improve reading accuracy and letter-sound knowledge. In addition, visuospatial interventions had positive effects on reading fluency and comprehension. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>Scientific evidence shows that systematic and explicit stimulation of phonological skills, combined with instruction in grapheme-phoneme correspondence, promotes the development of reading skills. <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11189365\/\">The multisensory method<\/a>, which combines auditory, visual, and tactile modalities, has proven to be particularly effective for children with dyslexia.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>Sessions can be held in person or entirely online, with the same level of effectiveness.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-695605e e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"695605e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eb4d0e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"eb4d0e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How long does the treatment take?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71c9486 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"71c9486\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There is no set timeframe. It depends on the severity, age of onset, and frequency of sessions. <\/p><p>What is clear is that dyslexia does not go away. But with the right intervention, the child learns strategies to compensate for their difficulties.
