It affects the ability to articulate words clearly. The patient knows what they want to say. However, muscle weakness or lack of coordination makes it difficult to produce speech.   <\/p>\n<p>It is important to distinguish it from aphasia. In aphasia, the problem is with language. It reduces speech intelligibility even though language production is intact. <\/p>\n<p>In other words: the patient is thinking clearly and knows what he or she wants to say. But the muscles used for speaking do not respond properly. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-422620b e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"422620b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-614afa5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"614afa5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Causes of Dysarthria<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c0bc01b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c0bc01b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Dysarthria can occur at any age. Its causes are neurological in nature. <\/p>\n<p>The most common ones are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stroke (CVA or ictus): the most common cause in adults<\/li>\n<li>Parkinson&#8217;s Disease<\/li>\n<li>Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)<\/li>\n<li>Multiple Sclerosis<\/li>\n<li>Traumatic Brain Injury<\/li>\n<li>Brain Tumors<\/li>\n<li>Cerebral Palsy: In Children and Young Adults<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33580596\/\">Dysarthria affects 22\u201358% of<\/a> patients with acute stroke. In Parkinson\u2019s disease, the prevalence is even higher: between 44% and 88% of patients develop dysarthria at some point during the course of the disease. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d45e289 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d45e289\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0e6407e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0e6407e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Types of Dysarthria<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0f4c86 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e0f4c86\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The type of dysarthria depends on the area of the nervous system that is affected. The main types are: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spastic dysarthria: slow, strained speech; hoarse voice. Common in bilateral stroke. <\/li>\n<li>Flaccid dysarthria: nasal, weak voice; hypernasality. Associated with motor nerve lesions. <\/li>\n<li>Ataxic dysarthria: irregular and imprecise speech, with variations in volume and rhythm. Common in cases of cerebellar lesions. <\/li>\n<li>Hypokinetic dysarthria: monotonous voice, low intensity, rapid and unintelligible speech. Characteristic of Parkinson&#8217;s disease. <\/li>\n<li>Hyperkinetic dysarthria: involuntary movements that interrupt speech. Associated with movement disorders. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nearly 90% of patients with Parkinson\u2019s disease have hypokinetic dysarthria. Its characteristics include low-intensity voice, monotony, consonantal imprecision, and irregular pauses. All of these factors negatively impact speech intelligibility and social participation.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-28359bf e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"28359bf\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1e09899 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1e09899\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Symptoms of dysarthria: When should you see a speech therapist?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f0d95e5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f0d95e5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Symptoms vary depending on the type and severity. However, the most common ones are: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Speech that is unclear or difficult to understand<\/li>\n<li>Weak, monotonous, or hoarse voice<\/li>\n<li>Speech that is too slow or too fast<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty coordinating breathing and speech<\/li>\n<li>Imprecise articulation of consonants<\/li>\n<li>Nasal or muffled voice<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue when speaking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If these symptoms appear, it is important to consult a speech-language pathologist as soon as possible. Studies show that dysarthria following a stroke is primarily characterized by imprecise articulation of consonants and slowed speech.
